Beginning the long haul

I'm entering my second year of library school, and I'm realizing that it's time to start the long, painful process of looking for work in the field. The classes I've found most interesting are the ones that relate to cataloging, controlled vocabularies, computer-related topics, etc. I work with Solaris systems and Oracle databases now, I'm pretty darned good with Linux and Unix systems (Windows systems puzzle me, though) and I'm eager for the opportunity to meld my professional skills with what I'm learning in school.

Of course, one of the reasons I wanted to go to library school was because I wanted to be in a profession where I could be exposed constantly to new ideas, new ways of thinking, new people, and new cultures.

I'm not shopping for job opportunities (not yet, at least). But I am soliciting ideas for where I could go with my degree, interests, and skills. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Sometimes the most rewarding starting point is a place where you get to do a bit of everything. The library world is filled with niche software, I am sure you could see opportunities to apply your craft all over the place. One of the difficulties with a bigger institution is that you can get sucked into a maintenance vortex that consists of one or two systems, whereas in a smaller place you can deal with many.
