B&N Drops Ebooks

Barnes & Noble online bookstore recently announced that it will no longer sell ebooks. But books purchased through the site might be lost...

B&N.com no longer sells eBooks. If you are a Microsoft Reader customer, you will be able to download your eBooks until December 9, 2003, through your Microsoft Library. If you are an Adobe Reader customer, you have 90 days from your date of purchase to complete the download via the email link you received.

What is weird is that the AAP is touting ebooks as the only growing part of their market. So is B&N just making a bad business move, or is there something else going on? And I wonder how much it really cost B&N to sell ebooks -- there's no inventory, no mailing costs.....

OK, that's their business decision, but B&N also is no longer going to a keep an online copy of a person's purchase on its ebook sales site. I suspect that they never promised to, and that they didn't even claim that the books in a customer's online "library" was an archive. But because of the way that both MS Reader and Adobe Reader work, when you download a book to your computer it keys itself to that computer, so it may be that the only way to move your library from one computer to another would be to download them again from the original site. I didn't have any purchases from B&N so I can't test this, but I might try it from another ebook site.
